Welcome

I am honored to have been elected to succeed Bob Morgenthau as Manhattan District Attorney, and plan to build on the traditions of fairness, integrity and non-partisanship that have defined the office for decades. In the early 1980’s, when I started out as an Assistant District Attorney in Manhattan, crime in New York was rampant. Two decades later, New York is now the safest big city in America. Nothing is more important to me than making sure we don’t take one step backward in the fight against crime and that we find new ways to make Manhattan even safer.

About Cy

Cy Vance, a graduate of Yale University and Georgetown University Law School, is a former prosecutor and veteran trial lawyer who has served for over a quarter century in the courts, in his communities and in government. Born and raised in Manhattan in a family dedicated to public service, Cy returned to New York City after law school to become a prosecutor under Robert Morgenthau during the high-crime era of the 1980’s. In the Manhattan D.A.’s Office, he handled cases involving murder, organized crime, career criminals, political corruption, and white-collar crime. In the court house, he acquired a reputation for integrity, toughness and fairness.

Cy’s Plan for the Future

When Manhattan’s next District Attorney takes office in January 2010, a new chapter will begin for one of our city’s greatest public institutions. The Office requires leadership that preserves the legacy of excellence, integrity, and fairness that has defined and distinguished it throughout the Morgenthau era, while providing the vision and expertise to adapt to new challenges. How we meet these challenges is critically important for our borough, city and state.
